Rules of the Road, Part 2

Running can be a very dangerous activity. Sometimes, it feels like you’re taking your life in your hands. Especially when you almost get ran over by a car!

Case and point:

I’ve told you guys that I run partially through quiet neighborhoods, along some busy streets, and on some trails. My neighborhood has it all. This morning, I was running along a busy street-against the flow of traffic, wearing my headphones with the sound low enough to hear traffic noise.

Imagine my surprise when a car that was backing down its driveway right next to me starts honking at me to get my attention. I see you sir. I also see that you can’t go ahead and back out due to the volume of traffic. So I acknowledge them with a wave and head nod and keep running.

The honking continues, as does their descent down the driveway, and I’m still running towards them. I pick up speed, and keep running, they keep honking and backing up, and narrowly miss hitting me by about 6 inches. Are you kidding me?

As I run past them, I turn back to see that they are still sitting at the edge of the driveway, waiting for traffic to move. In fact, I got nearly a block away before they could get onto the road! Seriously dude, you had to try to hit me just to wait for a few more minutes at the edge of your driveway? You’re awesome. Thanks.

It took all I had not to glare at them and stick out my tongue when they finally caught up to me and passed me a little while later.

Last time I checked, pedestrians (even runners!) have the right of way! Especially if you can’t go yet! Patience dude, patience.  Wouldn’t you rather wait than hit someone? I know I would!

Sheesh.
