Homestead Days 10k Recap

Wow! What a difference humidity makes! When I walked out the door to go to the race, there was steam in the air! I knew right then I was in trouble! Despite having not run more than 5 miles since my Half-Marathon on May 1st, I figured I would be okay.

Wrong.

The humidity about did me in! My 10k split time from the Half was 1:14:38. I just wanted to beat that, if I’m being honest with myself, I wanted to run 11 minute miles the entire time and make it in about 1:08. This did not happen.

I ran the first 2 miles or so without stopping at a pace of about 10:45 min/miles. Then I had to walk, because the humidity and the heat were killing me! It was 7:30am, about 80 degrees and about 80% humidity. I walked way more than I thought I would, however if I hadn’t I think I may have passed out. It was that bad.

I live in a small town, and there was a 2 mile run that was happening at the same time, but I figured that most of 40ish people running were running the 10k because, to me, 2 miles isn’t that much.

Imagine my surprise to find that only about 12-20 people ran the 10k. I nearly came in last! And my time was 1:09:41! I beat my previous time by nearly 5 minutes, and in my half-marathon time’s defense, I was pacing to run another 7 miles!

I came in 3rd from last, but the important thing is, is that I did it!

And I discovered something new about myself: I don’t like running when its so hot/humid out. So I think that I may just run for fitness and semi-training the rest of the year, but do most of my races in the spring. I don’t think I will do the Omaha Half-Marathon in September…too humid out!

Part of why I had some trouble running was due to a weird heart condition that I have…but that’s another post for another time!

10K’s, Half-Marathon’s, and Fridays!

I have a 10k run on Sunday that I’m not quite sure I’m ready for. I haven’t run more than 5 miles since my half-marathon on May 1st. However, once I get past the first few miles, I always feel like I can run forever. So I’m hoping that will help me!

I’m still debating if I want to run the Omaha Half-Marathon. It’s September 25th. Just about 100 days away according to Lindsay from Lindsay Does Life, its only 99 days away! The timing is not the best, but I love running and training for half-marathons…so we shall see. That may win over timing issues!

It’s Friday! I’m excited for the weekend and relaxing! Have a great day!
