Post-run selfie.
Ignore the dirty mirror. Focus on the super sexy sweat ring!

I’m going to toot my own horn for a second. Pardon me.

I haven’t run in tight capris since May. When I was getting ready to run, I turned to the side and was blown away by how small I am, front to back. I rarely look at myself from that angle so it was like I was seeing myself for the first time. So strange.

In other news, a firefighter waved at ME Durning my run today! I ran by a truck out on an active call…it wasn’t a fire…but this cute firefighter smiled and waved at me as I was running by! I think I sort of grimaced at him (my attempt at a smile) and kept running! Ugh. I’m the coolest.

Also, some roofers yelled out “whoo-hoo” at me!

Its a good day! plus, its my day off!

Happy Tuesday friends!

Well, it was chilly enough this morning for a long sleeve shirt! That’s my kind of weather! Great run, about a minute faster than yesterday! What a difference cooler temps and lower humidity make with my heart problem. Yesterday my pace was 11:20/mile. Today? 10:20/mile! That’s fantastic for me! I was also running a 8:15 pace for awhile! Success!

Happy Friday friends!

Running isn’t a sport for pretty boys…It’s about the sweat in your hair and the blisters on your feet. Its the frozen spit on your chin and the nausea in your gut. It’s about throbbing calves and cramps at midnight that are strong enough to wake the dead. It’s about getting out the door and running when the rest of the world is only dreaming about having the passion that you need to live each and every day with. It’s about being on a lonely road and running like a champion even when there’s not a single soul in sight to cheer you on. Running is all about having the desire to train and persevere until every fiber in your legs, mind, and heart is turned to steel. And when you’ve finally forged hard enough, you will have become the best runner you can be. And that’s all that you can ask for.

I like this “Miler Monday” thing…

Cuz that’s all I felt like doing tonight.

1 mile, 10:31, on the treadmill no less.

I think if I don’t run in the morning all of my motivation slowly drains away as the day goes on. I did NOT want to run tonight. But the fact that I’m going to the Valentino’s buffet for dinner with a college friend tonight, (Nebraska friends, you know what I’m talking about!) Meant I had to go do it.

Tomorrow is a new day. A day that’s supposed to be 100° temperature-wise…heat indices in the 105° range mean a morning run must happen! Even though it’s forecasted to be 80° by 8am.

I can’t do the treadmill. Not yet. It’s not time. So I will suffer in the early morning.

Have a great night friends!

Let me tell you about my friend Amber

Amber is “me” at the other TV station in town. She was the Senior Producer (recently pomoted to Assistant News Director!). She’s a marathon runner, she’s around my age, and she’s a Nebraska girl. We are kindred spirits. Soul Sisters. She is a sweetheart and I adore her.

Amber and her twin sister have been dealt a huge blow this summer. Her beloved mother, (a marathon runner and coach too) died of ovarian cancer in June. As she was dealing with the shock and grief of losing her mother…and preparing for her father to move into her newly purchased house, the unthinkable happened: her father (who has a chronic condition) fell ill. Suddenly, Amber and her sister were facing the unthinkable: putting their father on hospice. He passed away only days later.

I read this news on Facebook and my heart broke for her. To be this young (she’s in her late 20’s) and lose BOTH your parents only a month apart? I don’t know that I could come back from that heartbreak, that grief.

I saw Amber for the first time in awhile last night. I was at the Nebraska Broadcasting Association Awards. She looked good. When we got to chat for a minute all I could do was hug her, trying to take away some of the heartbreak she has. She told me you just have to pick yourself up and keep going. There’s no other option. Her parents would have wanted it that way.

Amber, I know you’re reading this. Know I’m here for you and that I love you. I’m here as a shoulder to lean on. You don’t have to be strong every minute of the day.

That’s what friends are for.

Reasons I like running outside in the Mornings

This is a response post to this post. I generally run in the mornings, but lately I’ve had some troubles getting my butt out of bed. This morning, I managed to do it!

  • The sunrise. Its pretty cool to watch the sun come up while you’re running through a sleepy town. (or not so sleepy city!)
  • The smell. It’s something that I just can’t identify…maybe its the dew on the grass, the night air clearing, I don’t know. But it’s there and it’s fabulous.
  • Running through sleepy neighborhoods. There is no one up and about and it feels like the world is yours. I like that feeling.
  • Seeing random people eating their breakfast outside. In just their robes. Or their boxers, (no judgement! I’ve witnessed this!).
  • There’s a certain serenity and calmness to the morning. The world is waking up, and me? I’ve just run 5 miles before most of them have even gotten out of bed!
  • Knowing that I’ve got my run in and done and it’s only 7:30am? LOVE THAT!
  • It wakes me up. It puts me in such a good mood and wakes me up more than shower and breakfast do.
  • There aren’t a lot of people out…or a lot of other runners. Running is MY time. I don’t like to share it.
  • However, conversely, I do like saying “good morning” to the other runners I meet along the way. What can I say, I’m complicated.
  • It’s a great way to start my day. Endorphines and sweat. Good stuff.
  • Getting honked at by random dudes. This happened to me again this morning! Usually it only happens at night, but I’ll take it when I can get it! 😉

These are just some of my reasons. I know there are more, but these are the onese I can think of right now!

Reasons I like running outside in the evenings

Normally, I am a morning runner. But the past few weeks have been a battle between me, sleep, and my alarm clock. And sleep has won. So I’ve been doing some after-work runs. As I run, I like to come up with the reasons that I like running at different times of day. Here they are:

  • The Smells: you just can’t bottle these. The smell of freshly cut grass while someone is mowing their lawn as you run by. The smell of sunscreen wafting through the air as you run through the park. And my favorite summertime smell? The scent of lighter fluid and charcoal as a grill is fired up. Also, the smell of hamburgers cooking on the grill. There is something about that that just screams SUMMER to me!
  • The people: There are people out and about when I’m out running! It’s nice to see other people running, biking, gardening, BBQing, etc. I like saying “hi” to them as we pass each other.
  • The dogs: So many people are out walking their dogs when I get off work. I can’t have a dog at my house and my parents and their dogs live about 45 minutes away so it’s nice to see and pet other pups!
  • Seeing the sunset. While I like to see the sunrise, there is just something special about a sunset too.
  • It’s a nice way to end my day. Good stress relief.
  • It curbs my hunger. True story. When I get home I’m usually famished, but after a run, my hunger isn’t as strong, therefore I make better choices. Winning!
  • I can take out my day on the road. After a superbad day, I set out for 5 miles, wound up with 7 and by the time I got home, the stress was gone.

That’s all I can think of. I have another list of why I like running in the mornings too.

(This is all part of my plan to psych myself up for tonight’s run. I slept in this morning. No regrets!)

Scenes from my 7 Mile run.

It was a gorgeous 62° here this morning! Not a cloud in the sky, and very low humidity! It is amazing how much better I run when conditions are like that! My first few Miles were at a 9:57 pace. That’s fast for me!

I paused along the way to snap a shot of this pretty area. Not a park, but I think it’s someone’s backyard! So lush and green.

And that’s me, post-run. Have ya missed seeing my sweaty face? 🙂 I know I’ve missed the workouts!

Also, does this happen to anyone else…during longer runs, like 5+ miles, my butt muscles get tight. Like I feel like I have knots in there. I don’t know if it’s my posture or what but it happens frequently. Today, I could really use a butt massage! 😉

Just wondering!

Happy Saturday friends!
