Notes from the Run

Today and yesterday were pretty perfect running weather; low 50’s, sunny, light breeze. So I hurried home from work and set out for some miles.

Tuesday I did 4. An out and back from my house down the busiest street.
Fun fact about Melissa: I don’t really like to run on trails. Lincoln has miles and miles of gorgeous trails but I prefer to run in neighborhoods. I like to look at homes and architecture as I run. I also like knowing there is traffic and people so no one can try to steal me. (I know, I’m weird.)

Today, I mapped a new route and headed out for 5 miles. 5.25 later I was home. I made the discovery that I live in a very hilly part of town. On one part of the downhill run I was running a 7:45/mile! Sweet!

I haven’t been able to run consistently outside for awhile so its been great to do it. I want to run 10-12 miles for my long run on Saturday. Its supposed to be 70 degrees and pretty perfect.

Oh yes, and to answer some replies to recent posts…

Melanie-I think I must attract bugs! I killed a weird looking one in the bathroom tonight and a spider in my living room as well! The valve problem must have something to do with it! 🙂

Ashley-I’ve never ‘met’ anyone else with bicuspid aortic valve! Glad we’re both doing well!

Josh-I DO have unlimited data! I have an old verizon plan from when they bought Alltel (anybody even heard of that company?) and I have unlimited data from that. I’ve never thought about using the home and work wifi.

Also-I have a date Friday with the texter—he was a good guy in person so I’m giving him another chance. I will keep you all posted.

Happy hump day friends! 🙂

Can I go to bed now?

So far today I have:

-Slammed my hip bone into the edge of my desk at work. Pretty sure that’s gonna leave a bruise.

-Caught my hair on a shirt hanging in the laundry room to dry. As I was standing up to undo it, I banged my head onto a shelf. My head is still tender to the touch.

-Screeched a little when I saw a spider scurry across the basement floor. (remember, I live in the basement! So EEK! to that!) the roomie yelled down to make sure I was okay.

-5 minutes later I came face to face (not literally, but close enough) to a cockroach on the floor of my bathroom. I let out a strangled scream and then calmly picked up my shoe and killed the disgusting creature.

I’m done. This day. I don’t even know. It wasn’t bad, just enough. I’m tired and I want to go to bed. At 8:30pm. No judgement.

In other news, I had my annual appointment with Cardiologist for my Bicuspid Aortic Valve Issue. My Echo looked great and he told me to keep running and doing what I’m doing, and come back in a year. He said he was proud of me for running the Full Marathon and Good Luck on Halfs numbers 4 & 5 in May. I love my Cardiologist. He’s good people.

Happy Monday friends!

Funk-y Town

I’ve been in a funk lately. Just a weird little funk. I don’t know why but it’s been there. Just having a lot of feelings. I’m fine. It’s fine. We’re all fine.

But the funk has affected my running. Between my appetite being practically non-existant, and a sudden 6.5 pound weight loss, I was having troubles running. I bonked on a run a few weeks ago. Only made it 3 of my wanted 11 miles. Not cool, funk. Not cool at all.

But this is my birthday week! I’m actively trying to get over the funk! I have to by Saturday (my birthday!) and I want to feel better about life. So today, today we ran.

And it was glorious! 5 miles, 10:00/miles. When I got to mile 3 I felt like I could just keep running forever. But I had things to do before I go to bed tonight so I stopped at 5. I felt good, my breathing felt good and I was killing it. It was a nice feeling.

I’m going to bed early to get up and run in the morning. I want to be happy and I know part of what makes me happy are those endorphins I get from running.

Have a great night friends!

I’m back baby!

6 miles + brand new shoes= great run!

I’m quite happy with this run. 10:00/miles. I was only going to run 5, but realized I had time for 6 and did it. It feels so good to have a good run under my belt again.

Everything worked in rhythm. I felt good, slept well, was well hydrated and ate dinner the night before. Winning!

I am so glad to be over the funk of the bad runs. I needed this good run. And man, do my new shoes feel fantastic! Didn’t realize how much I needed them!

Thank you for all your kind words. They really helped me know that I wasn’t/am not alone in the journey!

Happy Tuesday friends! 🙂

Got my new shoes! Stayed with the Brooks Ghost 5’s, but this time I got them in pink! I love the color! My old pair had about 700 miles on them…it was time to get new ones. The running company was having a sale, and I had gift card. Cha-ching! These babies only cost me $85!

I am exhausted

7 nights in a row with not a lot of sleep have caught up with me. I just ran 2 miles so my mileage is caught up for February…aiming for 1200 this year! And so far, so good. Now I’m going to eat a little something and go to bed.

At 7pm.

On a Thursday night. And I ain’t even mad about it.

My life is exciting.

Dear Self,

Sometimes, running sucks. And that’s ok.

Sometimes, you have days and days of bad runs. But you have days and days of good runs too. Its a cycle, it seems. Right now, we’re in a bad cycle. But that’s ok too.

You shouldn’t make it harder on yourself by not giving your body proper fuel (read: not much food at all) and not enough sleep for days in a row. Things will not go well.

You will struggle through each mile. You will curse yourself and your choices. And hate running a little bit.

But don’t worry! It will get better! Get some sleep, eat some food (proper fuel is important!!) and things will be better.

Promise.

Love, Melissa

Girls Weekend!

I’m in Omaha today, spending the day with one of my best friends. I don’t get to see her that often and so we are having a girls day. Going shopping, getting mani’s, and eating delicious food. I need this. However, because I was out late with another date last night with. (Bachelor #2! ) It was good! Update later! I didn’t get my long run in. There’s always tomorrow, right? I’m not even mad about it!

Happy Saturday friends!
