Primary Election Day!

I’m stuck at work–working about 14 hours or so today–for the Nebraska Primary Elections. And I have to be back in at work at 8:45am tomorrow morning! Its going to be a short night.

There’s not a lot to do. We had a 3:30 live update and now I’m taking a little time to blog.

I put my training schedule for Chicago in my Google Calender today. I figured out that September 15th is going to suck: that’s the day (theroretically) that I will run 20 miles. I have to admit I’m a little scared. Can I do this? Can I run this far for this long? It’s a little overwhelming to think about.

I only ran 4 miles last week. I know, I know, I ran a freaking half marathon just over a week ago! I need/deserve the rest. But I still feel soooo guilty. Its hard not to. I’ve found I do much better when I have a training schedule that I “have” to stick to. Otherwise, I tend to rollover and fall back asleep! 🙂

Well, I should get back to work! This election night is flying by!

Have a great week friends!

Lincoln Half-Marathon Recap

I’ve started this at least 3 times now. But how can I put into words what an amazing time this entire experience was?

My first Lincoln Half-Marathon last year was a little scary. It was my very first half, I ran it with a couple of friends, but I knew they would all be running much faster than I would be, so I didn’t have anyone to line up with on race day. And that was ok. I like running alone. Its my time.

But this year? This year was all about the internet. All about this community that I really didn’t know existed until after last year’s half. What a difference a year makes!

I went into the race hoping to PR my time. I’m down about 10 pounds from my racing weight last year, and hoped that my tempo runs during my training would pay off. I also didn’t want to walk at all. But I knew if I did, it wouldn’t be the end of the world.

The morning dawned with a vicious thunderstorm. I prayed it would end before the race started and we headed to the starting line. About 10 minutes before my parents dropped me off it stopped raining. I took it as a good sign! I met up with Holli and Lindsay and we made our way to the back of the line.

The Lincoln Marathon doesn’t have corrals, you just line up by your mile times or with pacer groups. I wanted to try and stay with the 2:30 pacer group and Lindsay and Holli decided that was too fast for them so they went a little further back. I also found my friend Rachael and suddenly, (30 minutes later!) we were off!

The course is flat & fantastic–especially for someone who went to school at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln! It winds its way through campus and then down into a beautiful older neighborhood called Sheridan where the homes and yards are stately and gorgeous! I get distracted there! Then, at the 10k point you hit the highway where you turn and follow the bike path for about 3 miles. After that you hit the only “hill”.  Its just before the 15k checkpoint and in the Country Club area. With a golf course on your right and even more lovely homes on your left, its hard not to get distracted here too!

Then you turn, and come out to one of the major city streets where you just know that Memorial Stadium (where you finish the race on the 50 yard line!) is coming soon! Its pretty great!

So I started running, seeing a group of Japanese drummers, a man dressed like Elvis, singing and reading our names off our bibs and yelling encouragement! It made my day when he said “Go Melissa! You’re a hunk of burnin’ love!” The spectators were great! Lindsay caught up to me around the 1 and half mile point and we stayed together until about the 3 mile point. But my hopes for a no walk race were dashed. I just needed to walk a bit. Which disappointed me, but I knew I would start running again.

I saw my parents at the 5k checkpoint, waved, smiled for some pictures, got some water and kept going! I had thought my brother, sister-in-law and 2 little nephews would be at the 10k point, so I just kept running. I did pretty well–only took a few walk breaks at this point.

I didn’t see my brother and sister-in-law at the 10k point, but I figured they were somewhere along the course. Before I knew it, we were on the bike path, and I was heading towards the hill.

The hill sucked. I walked up it, I walked after it. But I knew I had to start running again because I had some fans that would be waiting for me!

My boyfriend Joe lives about 4 blocks off the marathon route. I came over the hill and saw him waiting for me. He took a picture and ran with me for about a block. He asked me how I was doing, and I told him I was dying! It didn’t rain–the weather cleared up and the sun came out. Leaving it very warm and humid. He was concerned, I told him I’d be okay. I then asked him why I signed up for the Chicago Full? He told me I had this and to finish strong and off I went.

My co-worker Linda and her son were there too–but I never saw them. They made a fantastic sign. I think I was distracted by Joe! 🙂

As soon as I left him, I ran into Steph. She didn’t realize it was me, but I saw her sign, said hi, she cheered for me and I kept going.

About a half mile later, I saw my friend Kelly. She was volunteering at the race. She ran up to me, gave me a hug, slapped me on the butt and yelled, “three more miles, go!!” So I did!

At the 11 mile mark I saw my family again. My brother and his family and their signs and my parents! I got some high fives and kept going.

I finally made it to the stadium! I finished in 2:33:39, more than 9 minutes better than last years time! Yes, I had to walk–a lot. But I did it! I got my medal and started grabbing food and drinks–looking for anywhere to sit down!

My parents took Rachael, me and Joe out for lunch. It was their first time to meet him. It went very well! Then we went home and I took the BEST SHOWER EVER!

I think that’s it. It was an amazing race. I had a great time, but what was even more amazing was all the people who came out to support me! I couldn’t have done it without them. They are the reasons I kept going!

I can’t wait until next year! 🙂

Have a great day friends!

Lincoln Marathon Pictures Are Out…

When I opened my email this morning I had one from Marathon people telling me they had several pictures of me from the Lincoln Half-Marathon for me to buy. Below is a screenshot (with a little doctoring on my part) of what they sent me!

Now, I appreciate that they think I would feel comfortable enough to run a Half-Marathon in only my sports bra. But the fact remains that the first 3 pictures are NOT ME! They finally got it right with the last photo though! The good news? When I clicked on the link to take me to the rest of the pictures there were several more with me in them! And…some other randoms too!

Can’t win ‘em all, right? 🙂

I’m working on my recap! This week has been crazy so expect it sometime this weekend! Have a good one friends!

I need some inspiration

I’m having a hard time putting into words my Lincoln half-marathon recap. I’ve started it 3 times only to find myself at a loss for words. And for someone who writes for her living that is a very disconcerting feeling!

I’m working on it, I promise! The race was awesome! The weekend was amazing and I’m still trying to wrap my head around all of it. But the race deserves its own post and I want to do it justice. So I promise its coming!

Until then, have a great week friends!

Edit: I’ve tried to post my tumblr crushes but can’t get the screen capture to work. But Steph should know, she’s my number one this week too! 🙂

It all comes down to this…

I met and hung out with some amazing people today! I got to see Lindsay (lindsaydoeslife) and met Steph (stephsdoinglife) and Victoria (victoriafindslife), and Ben (bendoeslife)! Holli (cupcakesandchaucer) had to work, and the rest of the internet is meeting for another dinner now, but I live 45 minutes away from Lincoln and decided to go to bed early in my own bed tonight! I’m so sorry ladies! I’m very sad that I’m not there! You ladies are amazing people!

Tomorrow is half marathon number 2! I love running Lincoln. There is just something about running in on your home turf. Its a beautiful course and its mostly flat! Bonus!

I have so many people coming out to cheer me on, and I’m so grateful to each of them. If you would like to track me, just go here. My bib number is 7161 and my name is Melissa Lindell. My first half I just wanted to finish in under 3 hrs. I did it in 2:42:57. This one I’m hoping to not walk any of it and finish strong!

This has been a pretty great day, I hope tomorrow is just as amazing!

Have a good night friends!

Lincoln Marathon weekend

It’s here! I’m so excited to run half-marathon number 2! The forecast looks fairly crap-tacular. Wind and rain in the forecast. But one thing I’ve learned about Nebraska is that the weather always changes. And if you don’t like it, just wait a minute, it will change!

Tomorrow, I get to meet Steph and Victoria and hang out again with Holli and Lindsay! Sunday is the half and I’m ready to go!

Have a great weekend friends!

Attention Lincoln Marathon Runners!

Holli and I were talking and she can’t meet up with us to hear Ben speak at the Expo or go to the pastathon because she has to work, so we were thinking that we could all meet up at Braeda at 48th and O at 6:30pm Saturday night before the Marathon.

I still plan on going to the pastathon around 4pm, but I think we all need to hang out before the race!

So be there or be square!

My 1st Blog-iversary!

Today marks 1 year since my very first post! So much has changed and happened in a year. I’ve started this blog, met some pretty amazing people from the internet, ran some races, a Half-Marathon, 5k’s, and a 10k. I’ve reached my goal weight and managed to keep it all off! 150 pounds gone baby! 🙂

I’ve gone places and lived life to the fullest, and isn’t that what its all about? Enjoying this one life that we’ve all been given? Making the most of our time here, spending it with people that we love and doing things that make us happy? Somehow, along the way, running became something that made me happy.

I firmly believe that its changed my life. I went from weighing 295 pounds and being happy on the outside but desperately wanting a change on the inside. To weighing 145 pounds and being happy inside and out. And running did that for me. It helped me become the person that I truly believe I have always meant to become.

I’m so much happier now, so much more confident. I love this feeling! The happiness that I may have only feigned for the outside world I now truly feel. Sure, I have my down days–we all do. Its normal. But, until I figured out that happiness was a journey, not a destination, I wasn’t going to be happy. And that journey includes running.

Its my time. I can be alone with my thoughts, work things out, make sense of my life or even just my day. I can visualize my next race, see how I think its going to go. And sometimes, I just think about how blessed I am. How wonderful this life truly is. I have legs that run and a strong heart that beats.

This is a random post, but it really is how I feel! The countdown is on to my 2nd Half-Marathon this week…1 week from today we hit the road for the Lincoln Half-Marathon!

I hope you all have a great week friends!

“For a long time it seemed to me that life was about to begin – Real Life.
But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid.

At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life.
This perspective has helped me to see there is no way to happiness.
Happiness is the way.

So treasure every moment you have and remember that time waits for no one.
Happiness is a journey, not a destination!”
