Short Week Struggles

I’ve clearly been out of TV News long enough now (since 2014!!) to block out having to work holidays. I posted a cute graphic about it being Monday but a short week that ends with pie and shopping, so we can do this, and some TV friends reminded me that they will still be working. How soon we forget! The University gives us Thursday & Friday and I took Wednesday off to prep/travel (if need be) and I’m so excited for an extended time off!

We were going to Buffalo but circumstances with my boo’s new job made it so we’re staying home. We live 5 hours away from Buffalo so I had planned on taking Wednesday off so we could have some extra time with his family. When we decided not to go, I decided to still take the day off and prep our dinner since we are now hosting Thanksgiving for the two of us and four of our friends! I bought a bigger turkey and all the trimmings on Saturday and have my strategy for Wednesday/Thursday mapped out. My boo is smoking the turkey (all 20.5 lbs!) and so he has to get up at 5am to get it going, but other than that, I should be able to make several items ahead of time AND enjoy the day and my favorite part–the parade!

I was planning on running the Buffalo Turkey Trot but since we’re not going, I will run my own on my treadmill. It is supposed to be bitterly cold so I can’t say I’m too disappointed! 😉

Also, I feel that I have shown great restraint in waiting until today to really listen to Christmas music. I’ve got my spotify Christmas playlist going and it is giving me so much joy! I am waiting until Friday to do any decorating in the house, including the tree. That counts for something, right??

Ok friends, have a great (short!) week!

Turkey Trot 2 miler with my family.

My 8 year old nephew and I ran this one together. I’m so proud of him…He ran the whole thing! First time he’s done that in a race! And it was 15°! My legs are finally thawing.

We did it in 22:59. He’s awesome!

He won’t make a normal face when taking pictures. These were the best of the bunch.

My brother won a free Turkey and the boys each won a raffle bag. I’m the Susan Lucci of drawings…so I didn’t win anything, per usual!

Happy Thanksgiving friends! I’m thankful for all of you!

What your Thanksgiving meal looks like when you work the holiday:

My TV station brought in turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, green bean casserole, and a broccoli and rice dish. There were even rolls and pumpkin pie with cool whip in a can.

I don’t do green bean casserole or gravy, so this was my plate. Add in a small slice of pumpkin pie, and I am pleasantly full.  I even de-boned the turkey so we have the leftovers to eat tomorrow during the football game!

Now I’m on the couch about to watch Glee. Happy Thanksgiving friends!

This might look like an empty basement of a TV Station. But I assure you, it’s much more than that. I’m working today, and during my lunch break I used it as a track. I brought my running clothes and ran laps around the basement! I did about a half mile according to my Garmin! I’m doing it again after the 5pm before they bring in the Turkey Dinner! It’s my own version of a Turkey Trot! 🙂

I would have done it on the treadmill before work, except my roomie and her boyfriend live in the basement of our house where my treadmill lives. The sound in the morning wakes them up. If they have to work, they don’t care. But on a holiday that they’re both off? Forget it!! I couldn’t do that to them. So I will get my miles in somewhere, somehow!

Happy Thanksgiving Friends! Have a wonderful and blessed day!

“Someone has to do it!”

  • I have worked every Thanksgiving but 1 in the past 10 years.
  • This makes me not really enjoy the holiday.
  • Which is quite sad, because I used to love it.
  • Spending time with family, cooking, eating. It was great.
  • Now, my family makes everything and waits for me to come to their house and then we eat. Around 6:30 or 7pm.
  • It feels rushed. Not as much fun.
  • I miss the 2pm dinners where I helped make everything.
  • But the news doesn’t stop just because its a holiday. And my family is close (45 minutes away) so I’d rather work and let people who want to go home far away get there.
  • Plus I get paid 2 extra days for working Thanksgiving and the Day After! So I work 40 hours and get paid for 56. That’s fantastic.
  • I also don’t really like most Thanksgiving food. I like a little turkey, some mashed potatoes (no gravy) sweet potatoes, green beans (not green bean casserole! That’s disgusting) and a crescent roll. I don’t even like stuffing. Thanksgiving is just not my thing I guess. I’m not a huge pie fan either. (can we still be friends?!)
  • The station is providing a Thanksgiving meal to those of us who have to work tomorrow. So I will eat a bit of that and remember to be thankful that I have a job, one that I (generally) enjoy.
  • I really can’t complain either, because I have (including weekends) 10 days off at Christmas! I saved some vacation days and don’t work a lot in December. And not working Christmas is the best trade-off!

Happy Thanksgiving Friends! May you enjoy the time spent with family and friends.

Today I’m Thankful for…

  • the gorgeous weather at the end of November! It’s 68 degrees here in Southeast Nebraska! The sun is shining, the birds are singing and a nice breeze is blowing. Can’t get much better than that!
  • My job. I may have to work on Thanksgiving day, but seeing the faces of the People at the City Mission, eating their free dinner makes me remember how much I have, and how much I have to be thankful for.
  • My family. They are working on Thanksgiving dinner while I’m at work. I am grateful for them so I get to have a turkey dinner without doing any of the work!
  • My work family. I love the people I’m working with today. They are some good people. They make working on a holiday worth it
  • My friends. They are good people and put up with a lot from me. I’m glad they are in my life!
  • I’m grateful for legs that run. I may not have wanted to get up early to run, but I’m so glad I did! It feels good to be active.
  • And last, but not least! I’m thankful for all of you. Thank you for letting me share your lives. You all rock!

Turkey Trot on the Treadmill

I’m working today. The news doesn’t stop for holidays, and even though I’m management, I still have to work some holidays. So even though my town had a Turkey Trot this morning, I wasn’t able to attend. I decided to run my own version. The weather is gorgeous here, but the sun doesn’t come up until 7am. And I dislike running outside when its dark out. I don’t have a headlamp…maybe I need to look into one.

So I planned to do a 5k outside. But then I woke up late, and figured I should just quickly pound out a mile on the treadmill. So I decided that if I didn’t have time to run a lot, I would run fast. So I ran a mile at 9:13 pace. This is huge for me! I haven’t run that fast for that long in awhile! It felt good. So even though it wasn’t a 5k, it was still something.

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving! Enjoy your time with friends and family.
