Scenes from a Tuesday

  • I changed clothes to go for a walk with the dogs and I was NOT unhappy with what I saw. Sure, there’s some extra weight still there, bulges and whatnot, but I am actually fairly happy with what I see in the mirror, even though I am still trying to lose more. It’s a nice feeling. I’m sure it helps that things are fitting better since I’ve lost some weight! 😉
  • My coworker and I are taking advantage of the nice weather we’ve had have been taking walks at lunch. We go around 3 miles and it is great. Good conversation and a good workout. Today we met Oscar. He’s a rescue dachshund and just a sweet little boy. Made my heart happy to get to pet him. (My parents have two dachsies at home and I miss my girls!)
  • This third picture is NOT from today. In fact, it is from 2013 and when I ran across it the other day it made me SAD. I need to get those arms back. Aside from just losing some weight to get rid of the flab, I need to tone. And you know how I did it? The 100-day pushup challenge. So my walking buddy and I are going to that starting May 1st. I want to have some sweet guns for my wedding next year!
  • Speaking of the wedding, I am working on getting the details of the wedding hammered out. Thaks to @runs4donuts I found a travel agent (her sis-in-law) who gets what we want and is super nice! She’s working up the specs for us this week. Thanks, Tiff! We want to get our engagement photos taken ASAP so we can send our save the dates out soon–but I want them to be outside in springy weather…and that has not been the case recently. I am hoping that Mother Nature gets her stuff together and things start budding and blooming soon.
  • We got an email from HR on Monday that we move to summer hours 8am-4pm starting May 14 (we only get off 30 minutes early, but 30 minutes is 30 minutes in the summer!) AND the University is closed July 2-4, so we get those days as holidays!
  • I am beyond excited because the week prior to that I am going to Washington, D.C. for a conference. I leave Sunday, June 24, and plan to stay until June 30 to sightsee. Instead of flying back here, I will likely fly to Nebraska and see my family and friends and do wedding stuff (like hopefully pick out a dress!) and come back here on July 10, only burning 4 days of vacation time, but out of the office for 2.5 weeks!!!

Have a great evening, friends!

Let’s Celebrate!

Guys, in the last month I’m down 5.8 pounds!

I weigh myself every day and track it. I just compared 3/19 to 4/19 and had to do the math about 3 times before I would believe it!!

I have seriously committed myself to weighing and measuring my food, staying within my calories and macros, and basically cut out sweets (my kryptonite!) I had to do that the first time around as well. It is true, you can’t out-exercise a bad diet!

I find the science of how my body is responding to this fascinating. If you’ve ever thought about tracking macros, give it a try! It seriously works.

I have not been doing enough exercise. I know this. I am working on this. But, what seems to work for me is getting my mind right about food, and then adding in the exercise again. I have been running, just a few miles at a time a few days a week. Not really much of anything, but I am working on getting back into a heavier routine. #stopmakingexcusesMelissa

With this loss, I am 16 pounds away from my goal weight! Go team!

Did I tell you about the time the gym I joined in Lincoln for bootcamp tried to take credit for my 150 pound weight loss?

They had me do an interview with the paper, used an old before and after, and used the article on social media and in emails, along with the newspaper. They’re still using it today! I got this e-mail from them this morning.

The best part? The story doesn’t lie. I Did lose inches and gain muscle during my time there, but the massive weight loss? It doesn’t give them credit for that!
Hrrump.

My day in photos.

This dress. I love it. But I hate how it shows that I’ve gained weight. Le sigh. Look at that booty!!! Where did that come from?? 😨😬 I have 20 pounds to lose and I’m going to do it. I promise.

So today I went to the gym and met with the trainer. He showed me what weights I need to do and gave me a good plan. I know what I need to do. So here goes nothing! That photo is after my 3 mile interval run. ALL THE SWEAT. So gross.

Have a good hump day friends!

I’m not this kind of girl

I’m not the type to put up “Body Appreciation” posts on the reg. Until today I have NEVER posted a photo of my naked belly. But, for some reason, I feel compelled.

This weekend I wanted to check out what the hype was all about with the Victoria’s Secret sports bras. Well, I LOVED them! And when the lady told me that running tights/capris were on sale for $25 (regular price, $65!!) if you bought two bras, so I was in!

When I tried the pants on I didn’t hate how I looked. I didn’t see my body through the critical eye that I always look at it with. I just saw all the hard work that it took for me to lose 150 pounds. I saw the effects that carrying that weight for so long had on my body. I saw how it has (mostly) snapped back. Do I see loose skin? Yes. Do I see excess fat in areas that I would like it to be gone from? You bet. Am I working on it? You better believe I am.

So today, I decided to go into my archives of old photos. See the girl that I used to be. The girl that never thought she could run. That she could want to make healthy food choices. That she could lift weights. Today I see a woman who has worked hard to get where she is…even if she isn’t completely satisfied with how she looks! 😉 (But who is??) My body is strong. I am healthy. I am a constant work in progress. And I honestly do appreciate this body.

And that’s pretty cool.

The following article was written about me by my coworker to appear in our monthly newsletter. May is Open Enrollment for health insurance with the State of Nebraska and we do a Wellness Plan that encourages you to make healthy choices and move more. When my coworker found out about my weight loss, she pitched this story idea to my boss. She was all about it. Here’s the finished piece, including my before and after photos that will accompany it. If you have any great ideas for a title, please send them my way…we are still searching for one, thanks!

Transforming Melissa: Small Steps Yield Big Changes

Note: May is National Health and Fitness Month and Global Employee Health and Fitness Month. Here’s hoping this story can be a motivator for better health. Melissa participates in the state’s Wellness Option Insurance Plan.

By Julie N.

Melissa L. has lost herself. Half of herself, that is.

To look at Melissa, you’d never know that she lost 150 pounds – going from a high of 300 pounds to 150 pounds. And what’s even more remarkable is the way that she did it: the old-fashioned way, incorporating simple wellness tips into her daily routine, such as eating smaller portions and adding light exercise to her routine. In fact, you may see the 5’9” public information officer for the Department of Health and Human Services doing a few laps around the lower level of the State Office Building each day, as she logs the 10,000 steps a day prescribed by the State’s Wellness Options Health Plan while on breaks and her lunch hour.

As part of May’s Global Employee Health and Fitness month, Melissa shared her story with Connections.

Melissa, who began gaining weight in the fifth grade, noted that the catalyst of her major change was a former co-worker, who looked at her pre-diet lunch of cheeseburgers and asked her point blank, “why are you eating that junk?” As well, her mother, a cardiac nurse, warned of the dangers of overeating and recommended an 80/20 plan: eating healthily 80 percent of the time, allowing less-healthy treats the remaining 20 percent of the time. “I realized that my quality of life was not going to be great as I got older if I held on to the weight,” Melissa said.

So Melissa, then 23, decided she’d try eating a new way and kick what she calls “the other f-word.” While no food was off-limits (“that’s an invitation to binge,” she said of “forbidden” foods), breakfast was typically oatmeal or half a cup of Special K cereal; lunch, a Lean Cuisine meal – “because they were already portioned out,” she explained – and dinner a salad with chicken and dressing on the side from Runza. “I’d dip my fork into the dressing, then into the salad,” she said. “And portion control is absolutely key. With a lot of restaurant meals, I’ll ask for a to-go container and automatically put half of the food in it for another meal. When I was losing weight, I often ordered a kids’ meal. They are often healthier, and the portions are more in line with what we should be eating. And – bonus – they’re cheaper.”

Within a month, Melissa lost 20 pounds and was inspired to keep going, even though her doctor told her she’d likely never get below 200 pounds. “I took that as a challenge,” she said with a smile.  Teaming up with two close friends, Melissa began a regular gym routine two months after beginning her dietary changes. “Even when I didn’t feel like working out, my friends would drag me out of the house and to the gym,” she remembered (six months later and 60 pounds down, Melissa was a bridesmaid for one of those friends.) Melissa began by walking slowly on the treadmill, gradually adding weight-lifting and elliptical training to her routine. “I didn’t do everything at once,” she said. “I think if I’d tried to completely change the way I ate and began exercising right away I’d set myself up to fail. So I started eating more healthily, then began to work in the exercise piece.”

Melissa emphasizes that her weight-loss journey was a slow and steady path, rather than a faddish, lose-weight-quick scheme. “I started losing weight in June 2005, and I hit my goal in October 2011,” she said. That included a year-long plateau at 90 pounds down, which she broke through when she began running. She will run the Lincoln Half-Marathon for the sixth consecutive year in May 2016, and ran the Chicago Marathon in 2012. She’s also done “countless” 5K and 10K races. “It’s become a stress reliever,” she said. “I get all itchy when I haven’t run. Given a long-enough run, I feel like I could solve all the world’s problems.”

Melissa also emphasizes that keeping weight off is a matter of constant vigilance. “I weigh myself every day, and my weight will be something I’ll always have to watch,” she said. “I don’t have a superhuman metabolism. It’s hard. But choose your hard.”  But it’s a worthwhile tradeoff. “I had no self-confidence when I was younger,” she said. “People don’t see you when you’re that big, even though you take up so much space. If I had a dollar for every time I heard, ‘you have such a pretty face…’ Everyone knows what that dot dot dot means, even if they don’t say it out loud.”

She encourages everyone who is thinking of making lifestyle changes to believe in themselves enough to do it. “It has to be on your time, but getting healthy is a gift you give your future self,” she said. “And don’t beat yourself up if you slip. Every day is a new day.”

One week of @clevcrew’s food plan. Two weeks of lifting weights consistently. Five weeks of training runs. And this is where I’m at. This dress hugs every curve and makes me feel like a million bucks. It also helps that it is gorgeous here and I’m going with bare legs for the first time this season! This outfit is an NSV indeed!

I had my first check in last night with Sabrina. I honestly felt like I had not had any changes from the first photos I sent her. But that, my friends, is why you send in photos. I’m not going to put them here…I’m not comfortable with you guys seeing in me in a bikini yet…but, like the awesome coach she is, she pointed out what I couldn’t see: I’m starting to shrink in places. My thighs are where it’s coming off the fastest and I’m very happy about that. I’m also down 3 pounds. Small steps are just a part of the whole process.

I told Sab that I couldn’t stomach any more scrambled eggs so we switched up my plan and she gave me some advice on how to cook egg whites with my oats. I’m happy to report that the changes work great for me so far.

Have a great Tuesday friends!

So I’m doing a thing

I’ve seen all your success with @clevcrew and after much hesitation and delaying on my part, I FINALLY signed up last week. I started my meal plan on Monday and so far, so good. I’m not hungry. If anything, it almost seems like too much food! It’s very filling with so many more veggies than I’m used to eating at one meal. I’ve eaten some stinky food this week; salmon with Brussel sprouts! Sorry guys! I’m also drinking so much water I feel like I’m going to float away. I know that this will all be worth it!

Breakfast is a struggle for me…as I need to wake up first before I want to eat very much. So, I solved the problem: I eat a little bit at home then take my oatmeal to work and eat it there after about an hour. It works. The one thing I miss? CHOCOLATE!!! My co-worker brought in this tray of candy and put it next to my office so every time I leave my desk I go by it. I’m remaining strong. I will NOT have any of them. I’m not going to cheat myself. I have about 15 pounds I want to lose and I know that with Sabrina’s help I will make it happen!

I also started lifting weights last week. The Firefighter has been on my case for weeks not to “just run” and I’m finally listening to him. He found me a plan and I’ve been following it. I’m hoping that Sab’s plan for me will be more tailored to what I want to accomplish than this one is, but the fact is, I’m FINALLY lifting weights again.

So…dating….

As you’ve guessed I’m still seeing the Firefighter. He made me dinner last week. It was fun. He’s a great cook! But I know he’s seeing other girls and I’m seeing other guys. So that feels a little odd sometimes. But I’m just seeing what’s out there. I’ve also made plans to have dates with a couple of other guys as well. This dating around thing is kinda exhausting!!

This past weekend it was 76 degrees here. It was pretty perfect. I was a fan! Today it is 29 degrees. Tomorrow? The 60’s! This is why I love Nebraska. If you don’t like the weather, wait 20 minutes, it will change.

Fun fact: I’m the voice of the DHHS Nursing Helpline. If you call in with any problems, you will be greeted by my voice and that script. I LOVE that stuff! In fact, I could put that number here…if you guys want to call it and hear what I sound like?!?!?

Brooke @two-o-nine and I were facetimeing last night and somehow got on the topic of S Club 7. Do you remember them? They had this great song “Never had a dream come true” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOvTzpJDZfc I LOVED that song!

Have a great week cats!
